Indian forces’ violence against Kashmiris imperiled regional peace: NA Speaker

GENEVA: Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq says Indian forces’ violence against people of Occupied Jammu and Kashmir has imperiled peace in the region.

Addressing the 135th General Assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union in Geneva, he stressed the need to ensure protection of fundamental rights of people as enshrined in constitution of every democratic state.

The Speaker said people of Occupied Kashmir have been under general curfew since July this year and more than 150 people have been killed in cold blood by the Indian occupation forces.

He said the indiscriminate use of pellet guns on unarmed protestor has left over eight hundred people blinded.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said the entire Kashmiri leadership is incarcerated under inhumane conditions.

He said the people of Occupied Kashmir look to the forum of Inter Parliamentary Union to help end the repression and violence that they continue to face.

The NA speaker said Pakistan is actively engaged in further strengthening the rights regime in the country. The creation of an independent National Commission on the Status of Women and a National Commission on Human Rights through Acts of Parliament are major achievements. Over past ten years, the parliament has enacted around two dozen Bills, to safeguard the rightsof women and children, he said.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said the presence of anall-parties Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, consisting of 87 women parliamentarians, has ensured a balanced gender perspective in the legislative work of the parliament. We have established a comprehensive Human Rights Action Plan that focuses on access to justice, strengthening human rights institutions, human rights education, and implementation of UN Treaties and Conventions, he elaborated.

At the international level Pakistan has ratified seven core international human right treaties. We are also fully engaged in various human rights fora in developing, monitoring and implementing international human rights norms. This reflects Pakistan’s commitment to international human rights standards.
