NEW DELHI: India plans to build a port in Iran as it would reduce transport costs and freight time to Central Asia and the Gulf by about a third.
Narendre Modi is very interested to develop trade relation with Iran and other Gulf countries. India and Iran were agreed in 2003 to develop a port at Chabahar on the Gulf of Oman but Western sanctions had ruined the plan.
India once again wants to complete the former plan as US-Iran deal ease to work on the port plan. Chabahar port is situated in Iran near Gawadar. Indian had sent a delegation to Iran to work on trade, energy and infrastructure deals.
