ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday rejected petition to accept resignations of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers in the National Assembly.
The petition was filed by a former Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) senator Syed Zafar Ali Shah on April 6, 2015 to seek disqualification of PTI MNAs.
IHC Justices Athar Minallah and Aamir Farooq heard the case and dismissed the petition as justification for the ruling stated that the resignations were voluntary and the National Assembly speaker has full authority to determine their validity.
The case was heard by Justices Athar Minallah and Aamir Farooq who comprise the divisional bench. The court dismissed the petition, and after the hearing stood by their decision. The IHC’s justification for the ruling is that the resignations were voluntary, and determining their validity is the National Assembly speaker’s job.
It is noteworthy to mention here that PTI lawmakers tendered their resignations from the parliament last year in order to protests against alleged vote rigging in the 2013’s general elections. However, the lawmakers rejoined the parliament after formation of the Judicial Commission to probe into rigging allegations.
