ICC Champions trophy: Pakistan, Bangladesh fight for last spot

LAHORE: Pakistan’s chances of qualifying in international Cricket Council (ICC) champions trophy are fading as the Green-Shirts are once again on the verge to be eliminated for the tournament despite winning 3-2 against Sri Lanka.

Pakistan team is in all sorts of trouble following clean sweep defeat against Bangladesh and now they would be out of the upcoming tournament if Bangladesh win two more One Day Internationals (ODI).

Bangladesh have to play six more ODI game before ICC deadline to qualify for the tournament end in September. However West Indies are already through to with big margin.

On the other hand Pakistan have five games left ahead of ICC’s dead line and all are against Sri Lank.

Equation 1: If Mashrafe Morataza’s team win one ODI each against India and South Africa, they will have 91 points and will be at No 7 position in the rankings on September 30, which means Bangladesh will qualify for the Champions Trophy. The results of Pakistan matches won’t matter in that case.

Equation 2: If Bangladesh win 1 of their six home matches, they have to depend on Zimbabwe or Sri Lanka to do them a favour. In this scenario, if Pakistan lose one game against Zimbabwe or Sri Lanka, they will miss out their Champions trophy spot and Bangladesh will qualify.

Equation 3: Even if the Bengal tigers lose all six ODIs, they can still qualify. Then, Pakistan need to lose twice from their eight games. But any defeat against Zimbabwe will hurt Pakistan’s chances immensely and their loss will be Bangladesh’s gain. However, if Pakistan win the ODI series against Sri Lanka 4-1, then they will go through.
