Water crises: Hafiz Naeem demands immediate steps on K-4 project

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has demanded immediate implementation on K-4 water project in order to overcome the recent water crises, created by the past and present federal and provincial governments.

He made this demand while addressing a press briefing on recent water crises & its resolution held at a local hotel here on Monday. Prominent columnists, analysts and journalists were also present on the occasion.

JI Naib Ameer Karachi Osama Razi, Secretary Abdul Wahab, Secretary Information Zahid Askari, Dr Bashir Lakhani, Engr Saleem Azhar and others were also present on the occasion.

Addressing the press briefing, Hafiz Naeem informed the media persons that Karachi city which has over 20million population needs 1250million gallon daily requirement of water, however; the citizens of the city only get 550million gallon daily, which is an open proof of negligence of previous and present

provincial and federal governments towards resolving the burning issue of the masses. He disclosed that the prevailing water crises is due to the non-implementation of K-4 project, as not even a single drop of water was being inducted in water project after the departure of former city nazim Niamatullah Khan Advocate.

Hafiz Naeem further said the estimated cost of K-4 water project was Rs16billion on that time but now it has been increased by Rs50billion due to the apathy of the then authorities concerned.

He further said that around 65per cent of the total water supply is being wasted due to imperfect water system; adding that desalination plants should be installed to overcome the water crises.

Hafiz Naeem said that unbiased distribution of water is imperative to resolve the recent water crises while illegal sale of water through water hydrants should also be eliminated.

“If the previous governments can take serious steps towards resolution of water crises, then this situation could not be produced”, he regretted. On the occasion, he further demanded a crackdown against the illegal water hydrants; adding that Jamaat-e-Islami-Karachi has constituted a team of professionals which is carrying out research on basic issues and infrastructure of the city.
