Govt buys 400 electronic voting machines : Senate told

ISLAMABAD: State Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmed on Monday said that the government was buying 400 electronic voting machines, initially for Election Commission to conduct free, fair and transparent elections.

Speaking about a resolution moved by Senator Mohammad Azam Khan Swati and passed by the House unanimously, the state minister said electronic voting machines were now in vogue and being used for voting across the globe.

He said these machines were credible that was why no poll rigging allegations were leveled in the United States due to installation of these electronic voting machines.

He added if the experience of installation of those machines proved successful, 300,000 more machines would be purchased, adding India had already used those machines during 2004, 2009 and 2013 polls and the experience proved successful.

Several Senators including Agha Shahi Syed, Azam Swati, Tahir Mashadi, Lt Gen(r) Salahuddin Tarmizi spoke on importance of the purchase of the electronic voting machines, saying these devices would help and support the Election Commission a great deal to ensure free, fair and transparent polls in the country.
