KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has urged the Sindh government to give Karachi the powers mentioned in the Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto’s local government ordinance implemented in 1972.
Addressing the participants of the sit-in, the JI chief said they neither talk of 2001 law nor the dictatorial system. I ask the Sindh government ministers to read the municipal powers during the era of PPP founder Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Functional, planning, town development and public health service were all with the local government in 1972, he added.

Hafiz Naeem further said that garbage lifting, public road, rain storm drains, construction and highways were also with the local bodies. In 1987, Abdul Sattar Afghani demanded to hand over the motor vehicle tax to KMC.
We still demand today that the motor vehicle tax should be handed over to the KMC. The only demand of the Jamaat-e-Islami is to empower Karachi.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that the trade and industrial leaders must now wake up for Karachi. With every passing day, the sit-in has become the sit-in of the whole country, he added.
