Gilgit-Baltistan to vote for new legislative assembly on June 8

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has finalised all arrangements to hold election for 24 seats of Legislative Assembly in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region scheduled on June 8 (tomorrow).

Overall 272 candidates will take part in the upcoming race for a total of 24 seats of Legislative Assembly in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region while voting time will start at 8:00am uninterruptedly till 4:00pm.

GB-Election-1

Around 1,143 polling stations were established for about 618,364 registered voters including 329,475  men and 288,889 of GB region having right to elect their representatives amid tight security arrangements post deployment of military troops with special magisterial powers.

GB-Election-2

Following ECP directives, all political parties concluded their election campaigns at midnight on June 6 mid-night. ECP also completed provision of all materials relating to election under supervision of law enforcement agencies and military troops.

The Gilgit-Baltistan legislative assembly was created through a presidential order in 2009 and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won the subsequent elections, completing a five-year term in office. On December 13, 2014, an interim government was set up with a 12-member caretaker cabinet to conduct free and fair elections.
