ANKARA: A U.S. spy plane took its first flight from Turkey and bombarded Islamic State-held northern Syria, foreign news agency reported on Wednesday.
A Turkish official told AFP that a US drone carried out one air strike in Syria today while the IS hideouts were targeted near Raqa, a town in northern Syria the IS group sees as its capital.
The drone had taken off from Incirlik air base located in southern Turkey which was now opened to the U.S. military for armed attacks against IS militants in Syria, AFP quoted sources.
Earlier, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu had announced that Turkey is in mood to commence “comprehensive” fight against IS militants in Syria alongside the United States (U.S.) Moreover, Turkish government had also indicated last month to allow US warplanes to launch attacks from the Incirlik airbase in southern Turkey that is just 200 kilometres away from IS positions in northern Syria.
According to media reports some 30 US fighter jets are due to arrive at the facility in the next days in order to take part in the operation, AFP said.
