ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Hockey team’s coach Shahnaz Sheikh on Tuesday termed the national hockey team’s financial problems as the biggest reason for the downfall of the team and its miserable performance in the recently concluded World Hockey League.
Talking to media after reaching Islamabad, Sheikh claimed that the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) provided the team with no facilities adding that if the administration had taken notice of the situation 6 to 8 months before, things would have been much better.
“Players are not even getting daily allowance”, claimed Sheikh.
Stressing upon the need to revamp the whole structure, Sheikh said that he informed the government that the team’s performance will be affected by financial woes.
Sheikh revealed that he is even not getting a single penny from his contract with PHF and that too expires before Olympics 2016, which the team failed to qualify for.
The head coach maintained that he brought the team from number 11 to number 8 in international rankings.
Pakistan lost 1-0 to Ireland in the FIH Hockey World League Semi-finals. As a result, for the first time in their illustrious history, the Pakistan hockey team failed to qualify for the Olympics.
