FIA gets 90-day detention powers

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has been empowered to detain suspects for 90 days. Earlier Rangers had been awarded the powers in Karachi to tackle the crimes in Karachi. Rangers got great achievements against criminals and reduced targeted killing in Karachi.

The federal government extended FIA powers to intensify crackdown against criminals pertinently in Karachi and across Pakistan under the ambit of the Protection of Pakistan Act (PPA).

Interior ministry official said that the FIA was given the powers to combat with financial corruption and eradicate militancy in Karachi.

During a recent meeting of the Sindh Apex Committee, DG Rangers Sind Major General Bilal Akbar had disclosed a nexus of politicians, civil servants and gang lords involved in supporting organized crime and terrorism syndicates in Karachi.
