Facebook has decided to pay video creators for uploading their clips to the platform.
The company is launching a suggested videos feed that curates a sequence of clips, interspersed with adverts. Videos that keep people watching for longer will earn a greater share of the revenue from these ads, with Facebook keeping 45% for itself. The move is designed to attract more polished content and more ads.
Facebook users watch videos four billion times a day across the social network. Now, Facebook is getting serious about making money from that vast audience. The revenue-sharing model Facebook unveiled Wednesday is similar to YouTube’s, in that Facebook will keep 45% of the revenue. Facebook said that the initiative was aimed at smartphones.
