European stock markets fell at the start of trading on Tuesday awaiting regional data and following a slide in Tokyo.

London’s benchmark FTSE 100 index dropped 0.5 percent to 6,914.43 points, compared with the close on Monday.

In the eurozone, Frankfurt’s DAX 30 shed 0.7 percent to 10,666.72 points and the CAC 40 in Paris lost 0.5 percent to open at 4,476.07.

Tokyo shares slumped in low-volume trade on Tuesday after a sharp rally in the yen and disappointing second-quarter GDP figures hit investor sentiment, traders said.

US indices meanwhile jumped to fresh records Monday on stronger oil prices.
