Egypt domestic flight hijacked, lands in Cyprus

CAIRO: Egypt passenger plane on Monday hijacked after leaving Alexandria’s Burg Al-Arab airport and landed at Larnaca airport in Cyprus.

According to the details, there were seven crewmembers and 55 passengers on board. Airline spokesman said that the flight MS 181 was scheduled to land in the capital at 7:15 a.m. Sources said that one of the hijackers wearing an explosive belt.

The plane left for Cairo from Alexandria airport. Larnaca airport has been sealed and all flight were diverted. 10 out of the 55 passengers belonged to Indonesia.

The hijackers contacted the control tower at 8:30 am (0530 GMT) and the plane was given permission to land at 8:50 am, the police said.

The hijackers made no immediate demands and a crisis team has been deployed to the airport.
