ECP holds consultative meeting on code of conduct for general election-2018

ISLAMABAD: Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday arranged a consultative meeting with all political parties to discuss proposed code of conduct for general election-2018.

Addressing the opening session, Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza said the main aim behind sharing of such proposed code of conduct for general election was to get input from political parties and making it more effective.

He said the ECP has been working to stop illegal activities during coming general election and ensuring holding of transparent elections.

He said the ECP wanted to stop misuse of financial resources during the election campaigns and working on steps to avoid this practice in future.

He said that under sub article 3 of the article 218 of the constitution of Pakistan, the ECP has mandate to make arrangements for holding of fair elections.

He said the ECP was working to ensure minimum use of resources in elections and protecting the lives of countrymen during elections activities.

Justice Raza said by avoiding rallies and public gatherings during elections, acts of violence could be avoided. The code of conduct would be helpful for making peaceful atmosphere during general election-2018.

He expressed the hope that the representatives of political parties would give good suggestions regarding proposed code of conduct. Such code of conduct would be helpful for holding free, fair and transparent elections, he added.

He said that this code of conduct would also help voters to cast their vote in more peaceful atmosphere.

Justice Raza said the ECP, all political parties, civil society and the media may work jointly to ensure the transparent election process by creating awareness in public and taking solid arrangements.

Representatives of all major political parties including Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and PML-Q, attended the meeting.
