Earthquake death toll reaches 150 in Nepal

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs says more than 150 people have died in the capital, Kathmandu, following a 7.9 magnitude earthquake.

While Nepal’s interior ministry spokesman said that as many as 71 people have been killed so far of whom 43 were killed in outskirts of Bakhtpur.

The earthquake happened about 82 kilometers (51 miles) northwest of Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, where several buildings collapsed. “Everything was shifting. Doors were jammed because of the force. I almost wasn’t able to get out,” a witness told media.

Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport has been closed, according to local media. At least 150 people died in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu, the country’s Ministry of Home Affairs said.

The country’s armed forces have been called to carry out relief and rescue efforts.
