Karachi: Most of the City Wardens of Karachi Municipal Corporation KMC are absent from the their duties during the Ramazan and lockdown.

Millions of rupees are spent every month on the City Wardens by the KMC, sources said.

Some of the wardens are performing duties as guards with the officials of KMC.

They even buy groceries for these KMC officers, the sources added.

They said that 1083 wardens are deployed at various city roads, shopping malls, mosques and venues of Taraweeh during the month of Ramazan. However, most of the City Wardens are absent from their duties during the lockdown.

According to sources at the KMC, these wardens were appointed during the era of former city nazim Mustafa Kamal. Their basic responsibilities were to look after the infrastructure of the city government, including roads, flyovers and under passes. In addition, assisting traffic police during peak hours and guarding citizens around the mosques at the time of Taraweeh, managing traffic and removing occupation of the KMC plots were also part of their job description.

On the contrary, however, these City Wardens are seen controlling traffic and giving security on the eve of public gatherings and rallies of the MQM.

This scribe had made several attempts to contact City Warden Director Raja Rustam but in vain.
