ISLAMABAD: Legendary Cricketer Wasim Akram on Wednesday said a diabetic patient should control his diet and must discipline his lifestyle.
He was talking to a seminar on diabetes here at the Shifa International Hospital (SIH) on Wednesday.
Speaking about his fight against diabetes, the fast-bowling legend, regarded by many as the greatest left-arm fast bowler of alltime, said he was diagnosed with type diabetes when he at the peak of his powers.
Wasim is a living proof that diabetics can lead normal lives with proper care and discipline. Diagnosed as a diabetic at the age of 29, he played at the highest level at his career and went on to capture 414 Test wickets, 502 ODI wickets and make 7161 first class runs.
These days, he said he is happy to lend his support to any initiative that helps promote diabetes.
“I was devastated. It was a very hard time for me as I didn’t know a thing about diabetes but my wife late Huma researched about it and helped me a lot in that time,” he mentioned.
He said it is a very wrong perception that a diabetic patient gets tired at once. “I go to the gym every day. I sleep at 11 pm in the night and get up at 6 am,” he said adding a diabetic patient needs to schedule his life and diet.
“Diabetic Patients need to listen to their doctors and the doctor should also explain each and everything to their patients,” he said adding doctors and nurses are the future of Pakistan.
Wasim also took part in the diabetes walk that took place outside the SIH from Gate 1 but ended in the middle as Wasim had to hurry somewhere else in his car. The walk was also attended by doctors, nurses and medical students of SIH.
