Corruption, mushrooming skyscrapers responsible for water, sewerage problems in Karachi: Hafiz Naeem

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr. Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has said that plenty of skyscrapers is the root-cause of water and sewerage related issues in Karachi.
Being a stakeholder of the megalopolis, the JI Karachi chief has submitted an application, before the apex court’s inquiry commission on water and sewerage, proposing several measures to resolve the issue.
In his application, the JI leader held mushrooming skyscrapers responsible for the rising issues of water shortage as well as sewerage problems. He said that the water and sewerage system in the city has become outdated.
He proposed that the entire system need an overhaul which could be done under already proposed Rs500 billion package for Karachi. He mentioned that Ji welcomed the commission. He said that JI is an important stakeholder of the city and JI’s Nematullah Khan and Abdul Sattar Afghani had served the city in an exemplary manner.
The JI leader proposed to keep a check on Karachi’s master plan department, of whom corrupt officials have been adding fuel to the miseries of Karachiites while allowing construction of towering buildings without an assignment of available facilities.
He proposed to form a technical committee which would assess all aspects before allowing construction of a building.
The JI leader was of the view that any new commercial construction project should be subjected to the condition of establishing RO water plant and sewerage treatment plant.He stressed the need on implementation of all phases of K-4 water project. He also proposed to bring all construction related authorities under a single umbrella.
