COAS meets US Senate Armed Services Committee at Capitol Hill

WASHINGTON: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif has held meeting with members of Senate Armed Services’ Committee during his visit to Capitol Hill, Director-General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG-ISPR) Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa said here on Thursday.

General Raheel Sharif met the committee under chairmanship of Senator John McCain to discuss matters relating to bilateral interests, defence and global peace.

COAS was received by Chairman Senate Armed Service Committee Senator John McCain, Senator Jack Reed and other senior officials over his arrival at the Capitol Hill, Bajwa said.

Appreciating longstanding Pak-US defence cooperation, Senator McCain emphasised need to further reinforce the partnership in view of emerging developments.

McCain appreciated efforts, sacrifices and steadfastness of Pakistani Armed Forces under leadership of General Raheel Sharif in fighting terrorists in North Waziristan Agency both sides of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

With clear regional security perspective, COAS highlighted need to be stepped up for management of Pak-Afghanistan border, as well as sustained cooperation to deal with emerging threats.

COAS also held meeting with Senate Select Committee on Intelligence where chairman of the committee Senator Richard Burr, and vice chairperson Dianne Feinstein noted Pak Army’s perseverance and commitment that had degraded militants in North Waziristan.

Leadership of the intel committee acknowledged Pak has turned tide of terrorism. They assured COAS of US support and cooperation in eradicating terrorism and extremism.

During the meeting, General Raheel Sharif emphasised terrorism a global threat and warranted coordinated global response.
