ISLAMABAD: Children should be brought up in friendly atmoshere so that they can become confident and refined citizens.

This was suggested by a psychiatrist Dr. Wajahat while talking in a program of PTV News.

A friendly treatment and an open discussion with the child boosts his or her confidence, he said adding, in order to make a child more confident socialising would enhace his exposure.

If a child is shy, but, intelligent, that would mean the child was in introvert but not suffering from social-phobia.

There’s nothing abnormal about a child being shy he said. and added, but, Referring to children with social anxiety disorder or social phobia, he said,”they experience extreme distress over everyday activities and situations, such as playing with other kids, reading in class, speaking to adults, taking tests, or performing in front of others. Often, children with social phobia don’t even want to go to school because of their social phobia.”

Deliberating on shyness of children,he said, some of them even after attaining high professionalism like doctors ,engineers, pilots hesitate to face public.

“Don’t scold your child in front of others, so that his or her self-respect may not be hurt,” he warned.

“If you want your child to be a high scorer, adopt a carrot and stick policy,” he advised.

But, he suggested, the reward should be little or in chunks, so that the child might not become greedy.

Regarding punishment , he advised, “that should be totally avoided.”

Last but not least, he said, “Mothers should take care of themselves as well, because, he exhorted, “A healthy mother can take good care of her family.”
