KARACHI/LAHORE: The Punjab Government’s Provincial Transport Authority on Monday declared ride-hailing services Uber and Careem operating in Lahore as illegal.
A notification was issued in this regard to the Chief Traffic Officer of Lahore and to the Chief Executive Officer of the Lahore Transport Company.
The notification states that the two companies have been offering transport services “without registering the private cars with any regulatory body.”
Sindh government also spring into action, as the provincial Secretary Transport wrote a letter to the PTA to block Careem and Uber mobile applications.
“We wrote five letters to the Careem administration,” said Sindh Secretary Transport Taha Farooqui. “However, despite giving them a warning, we received no response in return,” he added.
He further said that in order to run a private taxi, the vehicle must be made commercial. He stated that owners of the vehicles must obtain fitness certificate.
