Bangladeshi police claim to arrest Al-Qaeda regional chief

DHAKA: Bangladesh police claimed to have arrested Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) regional chief Maolana Mainul Islam from Dhaka.

Police said on Thursday that they had arrested 12 suspected militants including the local head of Al Qaeda’s branch in the region.

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) spokesman Major Maksudul Alam said that they had seized explosives materials and ammunition in the raid.

He said that they arrested 12 militants including Maolana Mainul Islam who was the chief coordinator of AQIS in Bangladesh.

The spokesman said that the group was financed by individuals from Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates.
