PERTH: Pakistan’s Babar Azam has become the joint-fastest player in history to score 1,000 career runs in one-day international cricket, equalling a record that was first set 37 years ago.
The 22-year-old is also the first Pakistani to achieve the milestone. It was the 21st innings of his career. Before him Azhar Ali had scored 1000 runs in 23 matches, while Yasir Hamid took 24 matches to reach the figure.
Babar reached to 1,000 career runs when he scored 47 not out against Australia in the third ODI at Perth on Thursday. Overall he amassed 84 off 100, hitting four boundaries and a six in the match.
He joined the exclusive club of West Indies great Sir Vivian Richards, England pair Kevin Pietersen and Jonathan Trott as well as South Africa’s Quinton de Kock in reaching the 1000-run milestone in 21 innings.
He initiated the five-match series, requiring 114 runs in the first two fixture to set the record of reaching 1,000 runs in 20 innings. However, he remained unable to do that as he managed to score 33 and 34 in the first two matches.
