BAKU: Pakistan and Azerbaijan have agreed to further strengthen their relations in economic, investment, trade, agriculture, defence industry and other fields. Pakistan supported Azerbaijan over the Nagorno Karabakh issue while Azeri President supported Pakistan’s stand on Kashmir issue and called for implementation of UN resolution.
This was stated by Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at a joint news conference in Baku on Friday after the detailed talks.
The Prime Minister said they have agreed to effectively channelize their energies. He said the two countries have always shared similar perceptions and after his meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, he was pleased to note that they have shared ideas.
He said they believe that regional and global issues must be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means within the framework of international law. He said the two countries are advocates of peaceful neighbourhood and peace for development. He said Pakistan’s position to remain steadfast for peace should not be mistaken as weakness.
Nawaz Sharif said they discussed a wide range of subjects including bilateral relations and regional and international issues. He said they mutually support the issue of Kashmir and Nagorno Karabakh dispute which testifies their understanding and convergence of views.
He said they called for complete return of Azeri land and also return of IDPs and refugees to their homes. He said he appreciated Azerbaijan’s support to Pakistan for Kashmir issue.
The Prime Minister made it clear that this mutual support will remain in place till these outstanding issues are resolved.
He said they also signed a joint declaration which reflects their desire to enhance and diversify our dynamic relationship. He emphasised their political relations between the two countries are historic and growing.
The Prime Minister particularly mentioned the “Multan Saray” in Baku which has been named after the history city of Multan and thus it is a testimony of historic links between the two peoples.
President Ilham Aliyev said they discussed plans for joint military exercises, purchase of hi-tech weapons from Pakistan and have full understanding in this area. He said the two countries would enter into joint production of defence equipment.
The Azeri President said economic cooperation including agriculture, tourism and trade were also discussed. He said with electronic visa facility, Pakistni people can easily visit Azerbaijan.
He said our relationship is based on history and there are many signs of Pakistani culture in Baku.He also emphasised for addressing key areas like transportation so that there is greater communication of the two countries as well as other countries of the region.
He expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for the visit and was confident that it would further strengthen our brotherly relations.
He emphatically supported Pakistan on all issues including Kashmir and its resolution according to UN resolutions.
