Youm-e-Ashur will be observed throughout the country today with due solemnity and sanctity to pay homage to the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in Karbala.
On this occasion, various mourning, Alam, Zuljinah and Taazia processions will be taken out in all big and small towns.
In Islamabad, the main procession begins and culminates at the central Imambargah in Sector G-6.
Central procession in Lahore starts from Nisar Haveli, Mochi Gate, and ends at Karbala Gamay Shah, where Shaam-e-Ghareebaan (Night of the oppressed) is observed. Since 19th century, it is considered one of the biggest Ashura processions in South Asia.
In Karachi, central procession starts from Nishter Park and passes through MA Jinnah Road, Empress Market, Regal Chowk, Tibet Center and ends at Hussainia Iranian Khaaradar.
In Rawalpindi, central procession starts from Imam Bargaah Colonel Maqbool at 10 am and ends, after passing through the traditional routes, at Qadeemi Imam Bargaah at 9 pm.
Central procession, in Peshawar, begins at 11 am and ends at Manazil in the night.
At 7.30 am, central procession starts from Imam Bargaah Hussaini, in Quetta and arrives at Punjabi Imam Bargaah, Alamdar Road, after evening prayer.
In Multan, central procession begins from Aastana Lal Shah and ends after reaching the shrine of Shah Shams.
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar in which Shiites carry out mourning processions on main arteries of Pakistan, India and other few countries besides Iran. During the month they commemorate the death of Hussain ibn-e-Ali, grandson of the Prophet Muhammad and the third Shia Imam, at the Battle of Karbala. The mourning events reach a climax on Ashura, the tenth day of the month.
