About 8pc of population have diabetes in Pakistan: DIP

LAHORE: About eight percent of the population of the country is suffering from diabetes due to stress, lifestyles and unbalanced diet.

This was stated by Project Director Diabetics Institute Pakistan (DIP) Dr Sadaqat Ali while talking to the media here on Sunday.

He said a large number of patients did not know about their disease as they are less bothered to get their check-up.

Dr Sadaqat said unhealthy diet, fast food, soft drinks, smoking, overweight, physical inactivity, stress and depression were major factors of diabetes.

“Less than six hours and long than nine hours sleep may be considered a higher risk of developing diabetes”, he said.

The complications of diabetes might lead to heart attack, blindness, kidney failure and lower limb amputation, he said and added the epidemic of diabetes had major health and socio-economic impacts especially in developing countries.
