KARACHI: Police and protesters on Monday have been in Karachi’s Malir 15 area after demonstrators tried to block rail track during a demonstration held against recent arrests of Shia leaders and Faisal Raza Abidi.
Police fired tear gas shells at the protesters who blocked traffic on the National Highway. In retaliation, the demonstrators hurled stones at police and even blocked a train. They also hauled a heavy trawler and blocked Jinnah Avenue, disrupting traffic flow.
School children had to return home early morning as they got stuck in a traffic jam. Traffic at the National Highway was also suspended after the incident.
Police apprehended four protesters during the clash, which started around 7 AM today and is still ongoing.
Police have warned protesters of strict action if they did not end demonstration by 2:00pm.
