Libya claims death of key IS militant in US air strike

TRIPOLI: Libya government said on Sunday that Mokhtar Belmokhtar, a Islamist militant blamed for masterminding an Algerian gasfield attack has been killed in a U.S. air strike inside Libya.

The government said the strike had killed Mokhtar Belmokhtar who earned the nickname the “Uncatchable” from the French military.

Earlier, the U.S. Department of Defense said the U.S. military conducted a counterterrorism strike against an al Qaeda-associated target in Libya on Saturday night, but were assessing results before providing more details.

The Algerian was also a major figure in insurgencies across North Africa and the Sahel.
