Indus, Kabul, Swat run in low flood with rising trend

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) on Suday said the River Indus was flowing in low flood in “Kalabagh-Chashma Reach” with rising trend, River Kabul in medium flood at Warsak and low Flood at Nowshera and River Swat in low flood at Charsadda Road Bridge.

According to daily FFC report, other main rivers including Jhelum, Chenab and Sutlej were flowing normal.

The actual river flows and reservoir elevations indicates that Tarbela and Mangla reservoirs are at elevations of 1510.83 feet and 1216.25 feet respectively, which are 39.17 feet & 25.75 feet below their respective Maximum Conservation Levels of 1550.00 feet and 1242.00 feet.

The combined live storage capacity of Tarbela, Chashma and Mangla reservoirs is 9.941 MAF as compared to last year’s 9.001 MAF.

According to Flood Forecasting Division, Lahore, monsoon low has developed over North Bay of Bengal. Saturday’s trough of Westerly Wave over northern parts of the country lies over Kashmir and adjoining areas.

Seasonal low lies over northern Balochistan while moist current is penetrating into upper parts of the country upto 4000 feet.

As predicted by the Flood Forecasting Division, scattered thundershowers of moderate intensity with one or two heavy fall is expected over the upper catchments of all major rivers including Peshawar, Kohat, Bannu, Malakand, Hazara, D.G. Khan, Multan, Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi Divisions during the next 24 hours.

Rainfall of moderate intensity is likely to continue over upper catchments of all major rivers including Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during the period from 4th – 5th July 2016.

Isolated thundershowers may also occur over Gilgit-Baltistan during the same period.

As a result of flash flood experienced in tributaries of Chitral river (Ursoon and Nagar Nullahs) yesterday evening, a mosque collapsed in Banzal village due to which 14 persons were reportedly washed away while injured persons were being ascertained. Loss to life and other property in Ursoon village was being assessed. Mirkhani – Arandu road is closed for traffic due to flooding in nullah at Katagal.

Provincial Disaster Management Authority, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, District administration and Pak Army are busy in the relief and rescue operation.

Significant rainfall events reported by the Flood Forecasting Division, Lahore during the past 24 hours include; Mianwali=90 mm, D.I Khan=64 mm, Kamra=60 mm, Islamabad (Shamsabad=37 mm, Saidpur=32 mm, Golra=28 mm, Bokra=16 mm & Zeropoint=14 mm), Mandibahauddin=35 mm, Multan & Kasur=34 mm each, Bahawalpur (City=34 mm & Airport=13 mm), Shorkot=33 mm, Domel & Bannu=32 mm each, Bhakkar=26 mm, Shinkiari & Muzaffarabad=23 mm each, Jhelum=20 mm, Chakwal=19 mm, Talhatta=18 mm, Daggar and Lahore (Gulshan-e-Ravi)=17 mm each.
