7.8 magnitude earthquake jolts Japan

A strong undersea earthquake has jolted southern part of Japan including Tokyo here on Saturday.

US Geological Survey said centre of the quake was 874km (543 miles) from the Japanese capital Tokyo and its depth was almost 700km while it struck Japan at at 18:30 local time (11:30 GMT).

There are no reports of serious damage or casualties. No tsunami warning has been issued.
