The Supreme Court of Pakistan has expressed its displeasure on the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) for failing to effectively monitor content run on news channels.

“Television anchors are bribed with money to run their shows. They slander whoever they will,” Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali said in his remarks while hearing a case on objectionable content aired on television.

The CJP added PEMRA only issues warnings but does nothing substantial. “If the code of conduct outlined by PEMRA is followed there will be no problems.”

Justice Anwar Saeed who was part of the bench which heard the case said, “Don’t television anchors talk about derailing democratic systems? But all PEMRA is worried about is obscene songs.”
