KARACHI: Member of Sindh Assembly, Muhammad Yousuf Shahwani has said that the people of Karachi especially those living in the outskirts of the city including Mawach Goth and Kaimkhani Colony in district West were suffering a lot due to acute water shortage and it was only because of declining water level at Hub dam.

He was speaking on the call attention notice in the session of Sindh Assembly held on Friday. Hub dam was supplying 100 Million Gallon per day (MGD) and now Water at Hub dam was dried to dead level because there is no rainfall since long to refill it, he said and adding that people have left no option except to purchase water tanks from private resources.

“Water Board completely failed to provide water to people,” he said.  We have written letters to Managing Director Water Board to resolve this issue but he did nothing so far, he alleged.

In few places, people on self-help basis laid pipe lines which was otherwise the responsibility to ensure tap water to the people, he said.

Sindh Minister for Local Government, Jam Khan Shoro said that the issue of shortage of water was prevailing in different areas in Karachi especially district West because the level of water had declined to dead level at Hub Dam.

The governemnt is taking all appropriate steps to resolve the issue of water in the district West and other areas in Karachi, he said. The repair work is in progress at Dhabeji Water-pumping station which is also one of the water source to supply water to different areas, he said.

We are working on other option as well to mitigate the suffering of the people that including installing water pumps, he said and adding that the issue of water would be resolved soon.

There is only 11 legal hydrants supplying water to areas where there is not a proper system to supply water while other all illegal hydrants have been closed, the Minister said.
