Four-day anti-polio drive kicks off in Karachi

KARACHI: A four-day anti-polio drive begin in Karachi under tight security on Monday.

As per details, governor Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad begin the anti-polio drive from Hilah Ahmer Hospital.

Sindh Police Inspector General Ghulam Hyder Jamali has issued instructions for providing comprehensive security cover to polio drops administering teams and other stake holders during the anti-polio drive.

He directed all the DIGs to ensure foolproof security under the direct supervision of concerned SSPs. He further instructed to deploy police commandos with polio teams especially in identified sensitive areas.

According to a comprehensive report compiled by Sindh Operations AIG Ghayasuddin Rashidi about 5,000 police commandos and personnel were drawn from Sindh Reserve Police, Counter Terrorism Department, Sindh Crime Branch, Anti-Encroachment Cell, Shaheed Benazirabad Elite Police Training School, the Police Training College Saeedabad, Jam Nawaz and PTC Shahdadpur to perform security duties in addition to the existing force of police in the metropolis.

Karachi police has deputed around 7,000 personnel, 410 mobiles and 240 motorcycles for the anti-polio campaign. The Operations AIG in his report further added that 240 police commandos from RRF and 200 commandos from SSU have also been placed at the disposal of Karachi police for the very purpose.

According to the Sindh police spokesman, this is being done to provide foolproof security to health workers, doctors, staff members and families, particularly in areas of sensitive union councils, during the five-day campaign. The IG also directed that during the drive, effective mobile and motor cycles patrolling besides random snap checking at different points with strict vigilance at entry and exit points of the metropolis should be done besides the province along with timely intelligence sharing.
