LG polls: Widespread mismanagement, clashes witnessed in Karachi

KARACHI: Widespread mismanagement and clashes among the activists of rival parties and groups have been witnessed during the local government polls in Karachi.

Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi chapter Ameer Hafiz Naeem on Saturday expressed concerns over mismanagement during the local government election in Karachi.

The JI leader said that ECP failed to provide polling material on time at different polling stations. He said that polling stations at US18 plunged into darkness due to load shedding.

Hafiz Naeem said that the management did not take adequate security measures to keep the voting peacefully. He said that various presiding officers did not have ECP letter.

Due to lack of polling staff at Ward 1, UC-20 in Pahar Gunj locality of District West, Christian voters face difficulty during polling.

Following clashes at a polling station in Karachi’s Orangi, polling has been temporarily suspended. Clashes have erupted between Jamat-e-Islami (JI) and MQM workers in Shamsi Colony.

As clashes erupt between PTI and ANP workers, Rangers resort to baton-charge in Karachi’s Lyari area at polling station 7, UC-6.

Meanwhile, Rangers have apprehended three MQM activists portraying themselves as polling staff near Nishtar Park in Karachi.

While at least six people have been injured when clashes broke out among the activists of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Mohajir Qaumi Movement at Union Council number 16 and 17 of Landhi Town. Polling process have been suspended temporarily at many polling stations due to clashes in the metropolis Karachi.

Election Commission of Pakistan has confirmed that 92 complaints of irregularities from Punjab and 26 from Sindh have been registered so far.
