SRINAGAR: As many as twenty three were killed and 20 others were injured on Monday (today) as a bus they were travelling in plunged into a deep gorge in Udhampur district of Indian-held Kashmir on Monday.

The passenger bus, which was on its way to Udhampur from Latti belt, skidded off the road and rolled down into the gorge in Maroti belt in the district, Indian media reported.

“The injured are being hospitalised and choppers have been requisitioned to airlift the critically injured people to Government Medical College (GMC) hospital in Jammu from Mantalie belt of Udhampur,” Ms Mudgal said.

The driver apparently lost control of the bus while negotiating a curve, police inspector general Danish Rana said.

At least 25 other people were injured in the accident. Rana said police had reached the area and were evacuating the injured.

The public bus was traveling to the town of Uthampur when the accident happened near the village of Marotthi, more than 200 kilometers south of India-held Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar.
