Jaoquin Hurricane strikes central Bahamas

BAHAMAS: It has been a full day since Joaquin Hurricane’s extreme swirling winds started striking the central Bahamas on Saturday, a catastrophic situation may be unfolding with such a prolonged period of intense hurricane conditions.

Wind gusting to hurricane force are likely still lashing portions of Cat Island, Long Island and Rum Cay.

Flooding from storm surge and torrential rainfall has been documented on Long Island and Acklins. A Weather Underground personal weather station at Pitts Town, Crooked Island, reported winds up to 84 mph before it stopped reporting.

Unfortunately, this Category 3 hurricane won’t finally accelerate away from the storm-battered central Bahamas until Saturday evening.

Hurricane Joaquin appears to have passed its peak as a tropical cyclone, but it continues to hammer the central Bahamas with strong winds, storm surge flooding and torrential rainfall as it lumbers slowly northward.
