LONDON: London Metropolitan Police has charged Mazhar Mahmood, the “Fake Sheikh” journalist of News of the World magazine, with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, on Tuesday.
Deputy Head of Special Crime at the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Nick Vamos said, “The CPS has today, Tuesday 29 September, charged Mazhar Mahmood and Alan Smith with conspiring to pervert the course of justice after a full file of evidence was submitted by the Metropolitan Police on 5 June this year.”
Mahmood was found involved in match fixing and he played key role in exposing notorious spot fixing scandal of Pakistani cricketers Salman Butt, Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Amir.
The decision has been made in a case where he was found making fraudulent statements to create news stories and legal suits.
He will be presented in the court in next week.
Mazhar Mahmood had posed as Mazhar Majeed to expose spot fixing scandal that involved three Pakistani cricketers in August 2010. All three players and Mazhar Majeed were indicted in the case.
