Ex-US president Jimmy Carter dies in Georgia at 100

Former US president Jimmy Carter died at his home in Plains, Georgia, on Sunday. He was 100.

Carter was the earnest Georgia peanut farmer who as US president struggled with a bad economy. He also struggled with the Iran hostage crisis and brokered peace in the Middle East. Later, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work.

Democrat leader Carter became president in January 1977 after defeating incumbent Republican president Gerald Ford in the 1976 election.

His presidency marked by the highs of the 1978 Camp David accords, bringing some stability to the Middle East.

Carter’s government was dogged by an economic recession.

He lived longer than any US president. After leaving the White House, Carter earned a reputation as a committed humanitarian.

He was widely considered as a better ex-president than he was a president.

World leaders and former US presidents are paying tribute to the former president they praised as compassionate, humble and committed to peace in the Middle East.
