Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that due to climate change, Pakistan had faced catastrophic floods in 2022, suffering a colossal loss of over $30 billion.
Addressing the COP 29 Climate Action Summit in Baku, the prime minister said that many countries are facing the damages of climate change, if timely measures are not taken, there will be losses in the future.
He said that due to the floods, school buildings collapsed and thousands of people were displaced and the world promised to help Pakistan for the damages caused by the climate disaster. He urged that the promises made in COP 28 should be implemented.
He further said that Pakistan is among the 10 countries most affected by climate change and we do not want other countries to face catastrophic floods like Pakistan.
The prime minister said that Pakistan is taking vigorous steps to deal with climate change.
He added that the nations cannot put up real resilience without climate justice. He stressed the need to boost climate funding for developing nations.
“My government has taken concrete measures to deliver on its commitment to produce 60 per cent of all energy from clean sources and transforming 30 per cent of our vehicles to electricity (EVs) by the end of this decade,” the prime minister said.
