A new study has found that AI technology is not yet ready to play a role in the hospital’s emergency room.

Chat GPT may prescribe unnecessary X-rays and antibiotics for some patients while recommending hospitalization for others who will not require treatment.

The researchers report their findings in the journal Nature Communications.

Chris Williams, a postdoctoral scholar and lead researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, said it’s a valuable message for clinicians not to blindly trust these AI models.

Williams added in the news release that ChatGPT can answer clinical exam questions and help generate clinical notes, but it’s not currently designed for situations that involve multiple aspects such as emergency department’s situation.
