Former US president and Republican Donald Trump and Democratic Vice-President Kamala Harris clashed over the economy during their first presidential debate.
59-year-old Harris attacked Donald Trump’s intention to slap high tariffs on foreign goods – a proposal she has compared to a sales tax on the middle class. She touted her plan to offer tax benefits to America families.
There was a question before heading into the debate as to how both the presidential candidates, who have never met, would greet each other.
The Democrat candidate settled the issue as she walked over to Trump at his podium, extended her hand and introduced herself as Kamala Harris.
It was a disarming way for Harris to approach a man who has spent weeks insulting her race and gender.
Later, the debate settled into an expected groove. Kamala Harris swiftly painted herself as a forward-looking candidate. She predicted Donald Trump at the debate would pull from the same tired playbook.
She added: “A bunch of lies, grievances and name calling.”
She further said that she believes in the ambition, the aspirations, the dreams of the American people, and that is why she imagines and has actually a plan to build what she call an opportunity economy.
Trump said: “Look, we’ve had a terrible economy, because inflation, which is really known as a country buster.”
