RIYADH: The Riyadh health department has closed down a famous restaurant in Al-Hamra, northeast of the city, after a Saudi customer complained that he had found a worm in his pre-packed salad.

The department had received the complaint on its 940 number at its emergency center, an Internet publication reported on Tuesday.

A video of the incident went viral on social media.

Falah Al-Dosri, director general of environmental health at the department, said inspectors visited the restaurant on King Abdullah Road and found the same type of worms among its vegetables.

He said the restaurant was immediately closed, with the owner now facing penalties.

He said the department was concerned about public health, particularly food consumed at restaurants.
