KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Amir Engr. Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman has demanded of the government to complete the mass transit project, initiated by former city mayor Nematullah Khan, so as to mitigate the miseries of commuters in Karachi.

In a statement on Monday, he said that Karachi is the only mega city with population of more than 20 million individuals but without a mass transit system.

He expressed his grave concern over the situation of transport in the city that has become worst from bad after the recent ban on QinQi rickshaws.

He was of the view that without provision of alternative, the ban has further fuelled the already burning issue of transportation in the city.

The JI leader recalled that Nematullah Khan had introduced green busses under the mass transit project, which were illogically replaced with CNG rickshaws under mysterious circumstances.

He stressed the need to reevaluate the transport requirements of the city and introduce a mass transit system accordingly.

He further said that CNG rickshaws should be restored on limited basis to small routes with strict regulations and a proper strategy should be devise to cater the needs of the mega city on long term basis.
