TRIPOLI: At least 25 people drowned and 400 rescued as boat capsized in Libya. The boat was carrying about 600 migrants.
Sources said that the boat stuck in the sea due to rough weather. The boat capsized after migrants rushed to one side as rescue vessel approached.
About 600 migrants were attempting to cross the Mediterranean. It is thought up to 600 migrants were on the boat, many believed to have been kept in the hull. The boat is believed to have hit rough weather 15 miles off the Libyan coast, and made a distress call that was received in Sicily.
The UN refugee agency UNHCR said that there was not likely to be any more information until survivors were interviewed by aid workers and Italian officials on Thursday morning.
UNHCR spokesman said, “We believe the boat was carrying about 600 people, but we will never really know how many sank.”
