THARPARKAR: Poverty and social inequalities in Sindh have led to a sharp rise in suicides in Tharparkar district as over 125 women had committed suicide over the past 13 months.
A local TV reported that that over 125 women had committed suicide in the district by jumping into wells or hanging themselves over the past 13 months.
Problems are not being solved in Tharparkar district. On the one hand children, women and citizens are dying due to various diseases while on the other due to poverty, customs and social distances young women are forced to commit suicide.
Last year, the Department of Health failed to implement its agreement with an NGO regarding the mental health awareness to prevent suicides in Tharparkar.
In this regard, a workshop was organized in Mithi where psychologists, civil society and non-governmental organizations discussed the causes and problems of suicide.
It is not possible to prevent suicides in Thar without addressing social and economic issues, but they can be reduced through community awareness campaigns.
