At least 78 killed, over 4,000 hurt in Beirut explosion

Beirut: At least 78 people were killed and over 4,000 injured in an huge explosion ripped through a warehouse storing highly explosive material in the port city on Tuesday night.

According to Arab media, the explosion was so powerful that it was heard 200 kilometers away in Cyprus.

Initial reports suggest that the explosion was occured in warehouse of ammonium nitrate.

However, investigation has been launched to find the exact cause that triggered the blast.

President Michel Aoun took to Twitter and said it was unacceptable that 2, 750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored unsafely.

Videos shared on the social media showed smoke billowing from a fire.

The Lebanese Red Cross said that 78 bodies and hundreds of injured were shifted to hospitals.

The huge explosion took place in Beirut’s port area, which housed various warehouses.
