Karachi: National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lt. Gen. Muhammad Afzal has said that large scale cleaning of Karachi drains will start from tomorrow (Monday).
Talking to media in Islamabad on Sunday, Lieutenant General Muhammad Afzal said that the prime minister had directed him to visit to Karachi and take stock of the situation. I visited Karachi where I had three meetings with Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, he added.
The NDMA chief said that meetings were also held with Sindh Governor Imran Ismail and Karachi Mayor Wasim Akhtar.
He said that there is a large number of encroachments on the drains of Karachi and the sewerage system is not correct. 20,000 tons of solid waste is daily generated in the city.
He added that steps are being taken to remove encroachments including sewerage and rain water. FWO has been assigned to clean major drains and large scale work will start in the city by tomorrow morning.
