Islamabad: For the first time in the Pakistan International Airlines’ (PIA) history, the national carrier has been given permission by the US to operate directly to Washington.

According to a local TV on Thursday, the United States Department of Transportation permitted PIA to operate directly to the US to repatriate stranded Pakistanis.

The development came in response to a request made by PIA CEO Air Marshal Arshad Malik.

The PIA cheif had requested to the US ambassador to allow special flights to bring back stranded Pakistanis amid coronavirus pandemic.

In a letter to PIA, the United States Department of Transportation allowed the national carrier to operate 12 direct flights within a month to repatriate Pakistanis stranded in the US.
