CHENNAI: India on Sunday claimed that over 2500 Pakistanis had been granted citizenship by New Delhi over the past six years.

This was claimed by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while speaking at a ceremony titled ‘Programme on Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019’ here on Sunday.

She added that New Delhi had granted 2838 Pakistani refugees including Muslims Indian citizenship in the last six years.

Last month, India had passed the controversial  Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 that allowed citizenship to all religious minorities except Muslims fleeing persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
